Stories of Impact - Barbara Cole

We all want to feel heard and seen. For Barbara Cole, LawNY Board Member & Former Telesca Center Client, the Telesca Center was a beacon of hope, a collaboration of humans who listened to her story and put the law to work for her. “To me, the Telesca Center is the true meaning of love, trust, hope, and honesty. A partnership that stands by its mission and vision statements – creating a community where all individuals have access to their basic needs.

When I reached out to the Telesca Center, my world was falling apart, and I didn't know how I would survive. My space was infested with insects, and I was at risk of losing the place I called home. My insurance was being terminated, and I was losing my personal care support. My financial safety net was nonexistent, and I had scarce access to food and basic household necessities. When you’re older, sometimes people don’t listen. But when I reached out to the Telesca Center, I felt heard. I felt hopeful. I finally had someone in my corner, and I knew something good was going to happen. It wasn't always easy, but with every issue I faced, someone here helped me.

Thanks to the legal support provided to me here at the Telesca Center, I have a safe and clean place to call home. I can pay my bills, buy the food I need, and have the full personal care aid hours I need. My essential needs are met, and I can focus on my health. My blood pressure is down! I am grateful to the humans in this building for their compassion and hearts for justice.

I now serve on Legal Assistance of Western New York’s (LawNY) board of directors, and I am grateful to spread the word about the good work done here at the Telesca Center. The folks here are like family to me; family who helped me get my life back and look forward to a positive and bright future. From the first conversation, I knew someone cared. I knew something good was going to happen, and it sure did.”

- Barbara Cole, LawNY Board Member & Former Telesca Center Client

Every individual deserves access to their fundamental needs, regardless of their circumstances.

Here's to more listening and more life-changing access to justice.
